Stevens and Jefferson: Stupidity and Greed Cross Party Lines

Ted Stevens (R) was in the process of being prosecuted for accepting bribes, favors, illegal perks, what have you, and yet runs for his long held Senate seat in Alaska. Republicans, both the party leadership and the rank and file, supported his bid. He loses. And is then convicted.

William Jefferson (D), Louisiana congressman busted for variations on the same theme, while happening to have 90 grand stashed in his freezer (stop me before I call it “cold cash”), runs as well. The collective conscience of the Democratic party bosses takes a back seat to Jefferson retaining his seat, at all costs. Jefferson loses this past weekend as well.

Both parties fall back on the “innocent until proven guilty” line while supporting popular figures under indictment. Until our elected officials get their priorities straight, how can they or we expect Wall Street or Main Street to run a tighter ship?

Banks are going to find new ways to cut corners after we all go back to sleep, and failed but bailed out companies are going to wheel out their private jets and whatever other excesses they’ve kept in storage during this period of temporary self-righteous vigilance.

As long as our leaders believe a party line is more valuable than an ethical line in the sand, all change is temporary, all congressional hearings are self-serving drama, and the risk of the empire falling increases.

Oh, and good morning.

  1. Oh of course, ruin someone’s career before its proven they actually did anything wrong. Great idea.

  2. But that’s the American way dude.

  3. No mercy please, time for the heads to roll. For the past 8 years slimy pricks, such as these 2 winners, have sown their greedy seeds into the bank account of every citizen. Time to reap the harvest. Of course the money that was stolen never physically existed, but then again it’s value is dictated by the Fed Res anyway.
